John Hanratty has been training and teaching Shotokan Karate for over 40 years. He is Head Instructor to the Canadian Shotokan Karate Association; acting Vice President of the World Shotokan Karate Association as well as technical chair to American JKA. For 12 years Sensei Hanratty was the Provincial Coach for Karate Alberta, the provincially recognized body for all styles Karate.
He was elected 3m coach of the year in 1989 and was nominated for Air Canada Sportsman Award. He has received a Distinguished Citizen Award from the City of Calgary for services to sport.
Sensei Hanratty is recognized as one of the top instructors and in North America. His motivational skills, communication and teaching methods, plus an in depth knowledge of Karate history, application and technique, have him in demand to teach throughout Europe and North America. He has been teaching in the Calgary area for 30 years, 27 years in the same location.

Sensei Chic Sharp is a fourth degree black belt with 31 years training experience, for 27 years he has been the chief instructor of Revelstoke Shotokan Karate club, and Chief Instructor of CSKA BC. Sensei Sharp is a member of the CSKA technical commitee, and executive commitee, he has also served as National Coach for Team Canada.
His Club dojo is located at: Revelstoke Community centre, 600 Campbell Ave. Revelstoke BC.
Training times are:
Juniors Mondays and Wednesdays 5pm to 6 pm
Adults Mondays and Wednesdays 6:30 pm to 8 pm
Robert Hargreaves graded to Yondan at the CSKA summer camp, July 2008. Is the
president of the Fort McMurray Shotokan Karate Association. Member of the CSKA
Coaching Staff. Seniors Champion in both Kata and Kumite at the AJKA 28th
invitational Tournament, Riverside, California 2000.
National Canadian Coaching Program certified Level 1 Coach.
Jerry Adams is a 4th Dan, and regular club instructor.
Chris has been training for the past 21 years, and teaching for 18 years. He started his training in Fort McMurray and moved to Calgary to continue his studies with Sensei Hanratty.
He serves as one of the CSKA Honbu Club Directors and is one of the Sensei Hanratty’s senior instructors. Chris was also given the assignment as CSKA Ambassador due to his travels across Canada and the United States.
Chris is also a former CSKA National Team Member, has graduated from the CSKA Instructor Course, and has completed the National Canadian Coaching Program as a certified Level 1 Coach.
Paul Wohlgemuth (Sandan) serves as the Treasurer of the Fort McMurray Shotokan
Karate Association and has a lenghty competition record, culminating in three
appearances as a CSKA team member at the WSKA Championships, (2001, 2003, 2005). He
was the team captain for two of these (2003, 2005).
Paul is a National Canadian Coaching Program certified Level 2 Coach.
Sensei Bob Fraser holds a 5th degree black belt in Shotokan Karate and has been instructing Traditional Karate for over 40 years. During that time he has started and operated karate clubs in a number of communities throughout Manitoba. He recently moved to Morden, Manitoba and is looking forward to starting a club in the Pembina Valley area.
He was a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for 31years, during which time he instructed a number of subjects, including defensive tactics, officer safety and firearms to members of the RCMP and various other departments. In 1994 he seconded to the U.S. Department of Justice and travelled to Haiti where he provided instruction to the Haitian National Police Force on a variety of subjects, including police defensive tactics and self defence.
Sensei Fraser has a strong background in safety awareness and self defense which he incorporates into his classes.
Christian Amizola started Karate training with the Fort McMurray Shotokan Karate club. He continued to train in Shotokan Karate while attending the University of Toronto, and reached Shodan while in University. Christian came back to Fort McMurray, complete with his University degree, and serves as Secretary of the Fort McMurray Shotokan Karate Association. He achieved his Nidan rank in 2008.
Julie Hanratty is a Calgary based Junior instructor who has been training for 15 years. She instructs and coaches pee wee group and is also manager for Team Canada
